A little bit of simple from Little Bit Funky...painted wooden spoon handles.

Crystals wrote on her blog: "I just knew my wooden utensils were meant for greater things. I gathered them up, scuffed the shiny ones a little with sandpaper and painted myself a rainbow. Once they are dry they will be coated with a layer of food/baby/people safe shellac. I used regular non-toxic craft paint and was sure to keep my painted area pretty far from where it would come in contact with food on a regular basis."

If I could grab a few extra square feet from my living room and upstairs landing - completed wasted in these spots - and move them to our back door to create a real mud room, well I tell you life would be simplified!

I spotted a beauty at Muse Interiors, with lots of pretty built-ins, a chic light fixture and bench area,

so convenient when slipping off and on shoes!

And Ron Brenner Architects created a mudroom around the corner from the laundry, perfect!

takes away the worry of wet and muddy soles.

I've adored this wallpaper from Clarence House, inspired by a David Hicks design, every since first seeing it in a small powder bathroom several years ago. Being a true fan, I've used it in my own home and also had a story written about it for the latest issue of House of Fifty. A classic pattern that is both traditional and hip at the same time, it's currently available in 16 various colorways. But, my favorites are the yellow and taupe.

I've been a big fan of Frog Tape ever since a sales person at Sherwin-Williams suggested I give it a try a few years ago.

It helped make painting a large band of chalkboard paint around Max's room an easy job, with sharp lines.

A trend in design that I've immediately become a fan of is tile to the ceiling in kitchens!

Moroccan tile in a butler's pantry...

...and a herringbone pattern in the adjoining kitchen.

Interior Designer Tineke Triggs predicts this is a trend we'll be seeing a lot more of in the near future. See "Celebrating the Heart of the Home" in the new issue of House of Fifty to learn more about the above spaces.

And have you seen this one? It has been making its way around Pinterest, and is by Palmer Weiss.

Hello 2012!

It's a new year! On the decorating front I don't have any huge plans. But when I grow up this is what my house will look like: classic architecture with a mix of old and new furniture, and a lot of happy color thrown in.

On the fashion front, it was a good a start to the year. In a bit of fashion anxiety while dressing for a party I opened a drawer to see a long forgotten lace skirt, looking amazingly current{this has to be at least 20 years old!} Hey, that would work, but does it fit? I never hang on to clothes...glad I made an exception.

And on the House of Fifty front, we are busy wrapping up the fourth issue, to be released at the end of the month. It is shaping up to be what I hope will be the best issue yet! This has been a venture that continues to grow and one that I thoroughly enjoy working on. After years of working in solitary fashion on design projects, writing assignments and this blog I can't begin to tell you how rewarding it is to work as a team! Thank you everyone who has worked with me on House of Fifty to date, you're the best.

Here's to a fabulous 2012!

How To Make Gold Leafed Candlesticks

If you are like me, your taking this week kind of slow and enjoying some down time. But, if down time for you just happens to include a little DIY'ing, here's a fun way to update worn or old candlesticks with a little sheen!

Materials Needed:

collection of candlesticks in varying heights
fine-grit sandpaper
tack cloth
gold-leaf sheets

liquid adhesive
gold-leaf sealer
gold-leaf antiquing
2 foam brushes

Gather Supplies

Find a collection of old or worn candlestick holders and collect needed supplies.

Sand Surfaces

Lightly sand candlestick holder surfaces to remove any existing finish.

Wipe Clean

Wipe away dust with tack cloth.

Apply Adhesive

Brush all surfaces with gold-leaf liquid adhesive. Let set approximately 30 minutes until tacky.

Apply Gold Leaf

Lay sheets of gold leaf over candlestick surfaces and press into place with foam brush. Repeat until entire surface is covered.

Wipe Away Excess Leafing

Brush away loose particles with foam brush.

Apply Sealer

Brush on layer of gold-leaf sealer. Let dry 30 minutes.

Apply Antiquing Finish

Brush on layer of gold-leaf antiquing finish.

Rub In and Wipe Away

Rub antiquing finish into cracks and ridges. Wipe away any excess with rag.

How to Make A Votive Candle Runway For Santa!

Whether you live in a home with young children who are excitedly awaiting the arrival of Santa, or merely want to create a festive welcome for guests arriving during a party, here is a simple way to light the way!

Side note: Looking at these pictures I just have to smile! This is a tutorial I was asked to write last winter for HGTV.com, and I wasn't certain I'd actually be able to pull it off. I mean, we don't have snow every year in the NW. However, I gathered my supplies, took the "steps" photos and then set everything by the front door to wait for snow to capture the "beauty shoot." Perhaps I'd get lucky before the article deadline and snow would magically appear at my front door. Well what do you know, one night the weather report claimed snow might just arrive early the next morning. So I set my alarm for a crazy hour and amazingly snow was falling! I quickly moved out the glass cylinders, lit the candles and started capturing photos. This brief snowfall ended up being the only snow we saw all winter, talk about luck.

A few minutes later I heard screams of delight. The kids had awaken and wanted to get out and play in the snow asap...at a few minutes past six! I blew out the candles, bundled them up and off we went to make snowmen! What fun, I hope we are as lucky this year.

Materials Needed:

several glass cylinders or mason jars
rock salt
votives

length of garland
matches

Gather Supplies

Select glass cylinders or jars and gather votives and rock salt.

Fill Containers

Pour rock salt into each container, filling approximately 1/5 full.

Place Votives

Arrange votive in each container, pushing votive down into salt to secure in place.

Light Candles

Light candles, arrange along steps and enhance with a length of garland.

Wait for Santa to Arrive

Enjoy your handiwork, set out some milk and cookies and get ready for the man in the red suit to make an appearance.

Easy To Make DIY Architectural Letters

Sometime last spring I was busy working on a few holiday DIY tutorials for HGTV.com. How fun to finally be able to share these projects with you! Even earlier, when working on the Master Bedroom Redesign, I had such a great time making the "M" and "I" Architectural Letters for the art wall that I thought this could become a fun holiday project as well, using letters to spell a word fitting of the season.

Here are the steps to create your own...it couldn't be more easy!
{paper mache letters available at JoAnn Fabrics}

Materials Needed:

paper mache letters
tinted primer
silver metallic paint

rust-colored acrylic paint
foam and bristle brushes
rag

Gather Supplies

Select letters, gather paint, brushes and rag.

Apply Primer

Brush a layer of primer over letter surfaces, leaving noticeable brush strokes in varying directions. Let dry to the touch.

Apply Metallic Paint

Brush a layer of metallic paint over letter surfaces, leaving noticeable brush strokes in varying directions.

Wipe Letters

Wipe away excess metallic paint with rag.

Add Rust Accents

Mix or use rust-colored paint to brush highlights over letter edges and any rough or raised areas.

Wipe Letters

Wipe away excess rust-colored paint.

Apply Second Coat of Metallic Paint

Brush on second layer of metallic paint to diffuse rust accents.

Rub In and Wipe Away

Using rag, rub in metallic paint and wipe away any excess.

Display the Letters

Spell out the season's greetings on a table, mantel or location of your choice to spread a little holiday joy.

One year ago, I was sitting in this house wondering what was next.

While spending a few days with my family at a friend's beach house, I was trying to figure a way out of a slump brought on by a little run-in with "ageism".

I knew I had to find something to get excited about, for myself and my career, if I didn't want to buy into the message that my best days were behind me.

That is when the idea that led to the launch of House of Fifty began...

One year later, I'm thrilled. It was been such a rewarding venture to work on and I am so thankful to all the people who have become part of this project, and to the reception it has received from you. I think it is very fitting the "anniversary" of the idea for House of Fifty falls on the week of Thanksgiving!

It's Becoming A Trend: Update Your Coat With New Buttons!

After posting about giving my winter coat an update with gold buttons, I've been delighted to read comments and posts of people being inspired to do the same! Nothing like making what you already have "new" with a simple change.

I had a few just sitting in the drawer...

And a perfectly great coat from JCrew, it was just feeling a bit tired.

But nothing a quick change out couldn't take care of.

And hello "new" coat!

Have a coat you'd like to update? Grab a handful of gold buttons!

And what's this? I snapped these "after" pictures of the coat while shopping for jeans with my husband.

And yes, I take my camera with me everywhere...

Okay, Those Boots {for those who asked}

A few weeks ago I fell for the Melissa Boot by Frye.

Completely "swoon worthy", as my friend Lakeitha would say.

So off to Nordstrom I went to try them on.

As I perused the aisles, however, my eyes fell upon these.

The Bed Stu 'Kitty' Buckle Boot.

A quick try on and there was no question, these worn beauties were coming home with me.

Even Isabella approved, and that is no small feat.

Yep, great choice. I'm wearing these lovelies until they fall off my feet.

Glass Blowing

This past weekend I enjoyed a "girlfriend getaway" to the Oregon coast. Besides lots of catching up, a highlight was trying my hand at glass blowing. One of the friends wanted to make glass floats as gifts and recruited me as an extra set of hands. What fun!

My "helper", reaching into an oven with temps over 2000 degrees...

...a rod was covered with molten glass...

...and rolled into broken shreds of colored glass.

The rod was then placed in another oven to reheat the glass and colored pieces, all the while rotating the rod so as to even out the glass surface and create "swirls" of color.

"Pinching" with tweezers to make more swirls of color.

And back to the oven...more heating!

Then finally, what on earth am I doing here?

Blowing air into the glass so it expands to create the hollow glass float.

{I listened closely to the instructions to NOT BREATH IN.}

And the result...kind of.

fyi: This is not the glass float I made. I liked this one made by my friend much better!

So...that is the one I'm showing you.

I'm looking forward to doing this again on a return trip to the beach.

Perhaps a paperweight, wouldn't that be fun?

Slow Decorating

I've decided it's time to embrace the slow decorating movement...I've looked for a book but can't find one. Do you know of one? I think I first heard about this approach on the Nester's blog. But anyway, after rushing about my house for the last three years getting rooms redone and spruced up, I'm ready for a slower pace.

I like the idea of considering options more thoughtfully, and perhaps saving up money to get an item that I know I'll be thrilled with for years and will stand up to wear and tear. Or waiting until I find just the right item or solution for a space, instead of grabbing what I've found and making do.

Besides..."slow" is about all the time I have to put toward decorating these days! However, I did get one little project complete: The hanging of the wallpaper art.

Got some pictures to hang? You must get a package of OOK picture hanging hardware!

A couple measurements later, the Ikea Ribba frames showcasing colors of the vase wallpaper were hung...

...and pretty straight at that. Or close enough.

I'm loving them. Happy bursts of color & pattern!

And now I'm heading off to the coast with a group of girlfriends for the weekend...

Long overdue, we'll be finding lots to celebrate I'm sure.

This collection of items, which will add beauty and comfort to any bedroom, was inspired by the beautiful guest room designed by Interior Design Lori Graham. In her words, “Guests rooms should be comfortably chic with equal parts swanky boutique hotel and the creature comforts of home.” I couldn’t agree more!

The essentials include quality linens, pillows and soft light from lamps set on nightstands, both of which are more interesting when they don’t match! Drapery panels to block out light are always appreciated, while a soft rug is welcome in the cool early morning hours. for those who enjoy a magazine in hand it is now available in print!

I was over the moon excited when my first copy was delivered to the house, and I was thrilled by its quality.

{more like a beautifully printed paperback book than a magazine}

The only downside, being printed to order it is not inexpensive.

MagCloud does periodically run sales however, so stay tuned.

Updating What I Have: Winter Coat!

Color is all the rage this season in coats. After I discovered the unused JCrew gift card while organizing the piles of paper in the bonus room, my reward for completing the task was a trip to this store to see just how I could spend my newly found loot! On some color perhaps?

I didn't end up finding anything I just HAD to have, so my gift card is safe for another day. However, I did get inspiration on how to update my "in perfect condition" black JCrew coat purchased a few years ago.

(Which looks nearly identical to the above style being sold this season!)

Along with color, gold buttons are being seen everywhere...and this is something I can easily add to mine!

Luckily I just happened to have several left over from my fashion design days.

I love their "nearly too large" style, giving my "old" coat a fun new style for the season!
