Does This Signal the End of the Trellis Print?

For years the trellis print has reigned supreme in the world of design. And why not! It is simply a stunning pattern that has been used to enhance beautiful designs everywhere.

Beginning with the now iconic Kelly Wearstler's Imperial Trellis for Schumacher...

...to endless variations on the theme.

But now on clothing?

I was enjoying my birthday dinner at a lovely restaurant when I looked up to see trellis print has made its way onto clothing. (And yes, I grabbed my camera!) While I've seen ikat on several items of clothing, I had yet to see trellis gracing a garment.

So what do you think? When a print used widely in interior design becomes so popular it makes its way down the chain to fashion, is its expiration date nearing?

I hope the pattern stays put for a while. I bought a really cute bag for toting my things to the gym with a trellis print, I don't want to look dated walking into the gym!

I'll pretty much consider it out when I see it on clothing worn by my mom. (Until then, I am not ready to let go! Still lovin' it!)

Personally I've never liked the trellis pattern. It's over used.

I am a big fan of the trellis pattern but I must agree Janell, once it's over used it looses it's appeal to me. I don't want to be a person anymore that follows the pack. Still love my trellis though / :

Hope you had a great weekend Janell?

I think it's here to stay! Ikat and chevron have been used on clothing for a long time, and they're still going strong!

Oh I agree...it's the beginning of the end. Love it on wallpaper but DO NOT love it on clothing!
Glad I found this blog!

I do love the trellis pattern though it has been done to death for almost 10 years now so I would have to say I think that I agree with Fashion-isha and say it's the beginning of the end. Nicolex

I got a Talbot's blouse with a green and white trellis pattern on it like 3-4 years ago. I sure HOPE it is not the end, and the Talbot's thing makes me think maybe not. I LOVE that pattern

And actually, I've read over and over that a lot of pattern comes in clothing FIRST, although also the other way around sometimes....

When anything starts showing up at Target and Walmart it's time to shut 'er down and find a new direction. There are so many creative people out there that perhaps we need to see what else we can come up with. Trellis is classic, and will continue to be appropriate, but anything overused looses it's effectiveness. Maybe it needs to be a secondary pattern instead of the primary....anybody loving florals these days??

I think the treliis print is classic and here to stay. I was window shopping in our town over the weekend and there in the window was a trellis print dress!

This is obviously late to the discussion, but I've seen design start out on clothing and trickle down to the interior design world.

I don't think that in and of itself signals the end. Chevron was huge last year and I had a shirt with chevron probably 7 years ago.

I understand, though. You feel it's over kill at some point.

I tend to think when a design becomes common in the uber cheapy stores, then I'm ready to look else where.

Not always, though. You love what you love.
